John Leverett becomes president of Harvard.

The first lay president of Harvard, according to Ferris Greenslet, “Leverett] shake[s] off the incubus of the fierce orthodoxy of the Mathers.” In Boston, Leverett lived in house on the site of the Sears Crescent Building near today’s 33 Court Street.
